The Science Award from the Stifterverband (a German foundation for the promotion of science) was presented to the “Compact LED Light Sources” project team on October 18, 2006 at the annual Fraunhofer conference in Bremen. In addition to OSRAM Opto Semiconductors the team includes the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF, Carl Zeiss Jena and Siemens VDO Automotive. The aim of the project promoted by the German Federal Ministry for Research and Development was to identify new applications for LEDs and produce marketable products.

The “Compact LED Light Sources” project was initiated by OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. The semiconductor manufacturer brought in some first-rate partners in the form of the Fraunhofer Institute for Optics and Precision Engineering, Carl Zeiss Jena and Siemens VDO Automotive. In close cooperation, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors developed a new generation of highly efficient chips with tailor-made beam profiles. These LEDs no longer emit light on all sides but just at the surface. This is ideal for injecting the light into the optical engines of projection systems. The partners in the project contributed their expertise in beam positioning, their knowledge of special optics and their know-how in implementing innovative system solutions.

The new LEDs in red, green, blue and white from the current OSTAR series offer impressive luminance. Because there are pure surface emitters they meet all the requirements for use in high-performance projection systems. Special mounting technologies are used to ensure optimum heat removal at high chip packing densities.

Miniaturised beamers, razor-sharp head-up displays and high-brightness rear protection televisions will all benefit from these compact high-power LED light sources. OSTAR Projection is now market-ready and has already been used successfully in mini projection systems and head-up displays.

As a mediator between the science and business worlds the Stifterverband identifies applied research projects of excellence that the Fraunhofer institutes then runs together with business enterprises and/or other research organisations.
