San Jose, CA May 17, 2005 — Micrel Inc., (Nasdaq:MCRL) - launched a new 2.7 Gbps high-current, low power laser driver for FP/DFB lasers. The SY88982 offers 2.4V minimum laser compliance voltage for high-current, DC-coupled applications for Metro Area Networking (MAN), Local Area Networking (LAN) and Storage Area Networking (SAN) telecom and datacom markets.

“In today’s SFF and SFP modules markets, DC-coupled operation and board space are the two most important requirements. Micrel’s SY88982 is the smallest laser driver with the most compliance voltage,” noted Thomas S. Wong, vice president high bandwidth products, Micrel. “Using the SY88982 together with Micrel’s MIC3001 Optical Transceiver Management IC allows for modulation and bias current control and monitoring, automatic power control and temperature compensation, providing designers with the most competitive FP/DFB laser driver solution available on the market.”

The SY88982 is a 3.3V, 2.7Gbps chip offering 2.4V minimum voltage and a high modulation current up to 90mA. It is available in the small form factor, 16-pin, and 3 mm x 3 mm MLF™ Pb-free packaging. Ideal for multi-rate LAN and MAN applications such as FC, GbE, SONET OC-3/12/24/24 and SDH/STM1/4/8/16, the IC requires fewer components because of DC-coupling capability and consumes less power due to the lower supply current.
