TEMPE, Arizona — Freescale Semiconductor's Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution (EDGE) RF subsystem has been selected for the TTPCom cellular baseband engine (CBEmacro) 2G modem design. The combination of Freescale's proven RF experience with TTPCom's expertise in designing communications subsystems will reduce time to market for terminal and silicon manufacturers.

This CBEmacro platform will be one of the world's first solutions to provide the benefits of DigRF, an open standard designed to allow compliant ICs to always communicate with each other. The Freescale radio will be pre-integrated into the platform designed to significantly improve the time to market of devices built around CBEmacro through reduced development and test time and cost.

"Our evaluation revealed that Freescale offers an excellent combination of RF experience, performance, cost and DigRF standard compatibility," said Julian Hildersley, managing director of TTPCom's silicon business unit. "Supporting Freescale's EDGE RF enables us to provide our customers complete solutions, leading to an open market in digital terminal components."

Freescale's EDGE RF subsystem was introduced in February 2005. It consists of the MMM6000 transceiver, which integrates the analog baseband and contains a DigRF interface and MMM6027 power amplifier that includes the antenna switch and most passive components.

"We anticipate handset manufacturers will replace entire GSM/GPRS line-ups with EDGE-capable technology," said Kent Heath, director of cellular operations, Radio Products Division for Freescale. "This reference design will allow manufacturers to do that quickly and efficiently. We are excited to be working with TTPCom. Combining our industry strengths will greatly benefit customers worldwide."

Freescale's RF subsystem met the high expectations for TTPCom's GSM/GPRS/EDGE reference design by offering:

* High integration of components resulting in reduced bill of materials.
* Compliance with industry-standard DigRF interface for ease of design.
* Auto-calibration feature that helps to improvehandset yields in manufacturing.
* Low current consumption for longer battery life.
* Proven, reliable quality for clear reception, low noise and fewer dropped calls.

EDGE is an enhancement of previous networks to triple the data speeds for multimedia and Internet access. Higher data rates are ideal for feature phones, smart phones, PDAs, PC cards and wireless modules. To date, 147 network operators in 81 countries are committed to deploying GSM/EDGE for the delivery of next generation services.*
