Analog Devices is introducing a triple differential receiver, the AD8143, that offers a compact single-chip solution for receiving differential signals over twisted pair cable. The AD8143 is primarily designed to receive RGB (red-green-blue) signals having resolutions up to 1600 x 1200; however, it can also be used to receive any other type of differential analog signal or high-speed data transmission. When compared with multi-chip solutions, the AD8143 reduces board space by up to 60 percent and decreases costs by as much as 45 percent.

With a high common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) of 70 dB at 10 MHz, the AD8143 eliminates the effects of induced electromagnetic interference (EMI) over long cables, further reducing cost by allowing for the use of unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable. The AD8143 converts differential inputs to single-ended outputs, and the wide common mode input range of ± 10 V maintains signal integrity in systems where ground potential is different between the drive and receive ends.

In addition to the three differential receivers, the AD8143 includes two auxiliary comparators, which can be used to receive digital signals from the fourth twisted pair of the Cat-5 cable, such as keyboard or mouse functions in KVM applications.

The AD8143 complements Analog Devices’ AD8133, the industry’s smallest triple differential line driver specifically designed for driving RGB signals over Cat-5 cables. Paired together, the AD8143 and AD8133 offer a complete solution for transporting video over twisted pair cable.
