CAMARILLO, Calif. - Semtech Corp. , a
leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers, and
industrial equipment, today announced the RClamp3304N, a 3.3-volt transient voltage suppression (TVS) protection
device with a footprint that is 77% smaller than the industry standard.
Replacing
up to nine discrete components, the RClamp3304N uses exclusive Semtech process technology to achieve full
functionality with great clamping performance in a small device. This design, combined with the company’s new
leadless SLP packaging, results in a footprint measuring only 2.6 mm x 2.6 mm with an ultra-low 0.6 mm
profile. The device is the newest member of Semtech’s RailClamp® family of low-capacitance TVS
arrays that protect high-speed data and input/output interfaces from over-voltage situations. The RClamp3304N
protects up to four low-voltage interfaces against electro-static discharge (ESD), cable discharge events and
lightning. It offers protection levels that exceed IEC 61000-4-2 ESD specifications. The broad range of
applications for this device include integrated connectors, USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet, T1/E1, and T3/E3 interfaces
in base stations, central office equipment, routers, hubs, set-top boxes, and servers, notebook and desktop
computers. “The RClamp3304N highlights Semtech’s advanced technology and the real-world
size and protection benefits it provides,” said Tom Dugan, Semtech's Director of Protection Products.
“The small size and exceptional functionality provided by the RClamp3304N enables designers to provide
comprehensive protection for their systems without sacrificing other functionality due to lack of board
space.” The device has an extremely low clamping voltage for lightning induced peak pulse currents
of up to 25 amps providing superior protection for sensitive ICs in high-threat environments. The superior clamping
voltage is due in part to a large center tab on the device that serves as a low inductance path to ground for
shunting electrical transients away from the protected device. The TVS diodes in the RClamp3304N are constructed using Semtech’s proprietary
Enhanced Punch-through Diode (EPD) process technology that provides low standoff voltages and enables very low
leakage currents and capacitance over traditional silicon avalanche diode processes. Its low capacitance of less
than 5pF makes it well suited for high-speed interfaces. The lead-free design of the device complies
with the European Union’s Restriction on Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS)
directive to meet worldwide environmental and regulatory requirements. Key Features of the
