Intel Expands Commitment To Multi-Billion Dollar NOR Flash Embedded Market Segments

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Intel Corporation today disclosed that it will expand its portfolio of NOR flash memory products for the growing multi-billion dollar embedded market segments. The company outlined plans to introduce a 3-volt (3V) version of its Intel StrataFlash® Embedded Memory architecture. Intel also disclosed that it will enter the fast-growing serial flash segment with its first Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) product.

These moves underscore Intel’s commitment to the NOR embedded flash memory market segments, which encompass a wide range of consumer electronics devices, industrial applications, PCs and wired communications equipment. Analysts estimate that the NOR embedded flash market segments (excluding handsets) will reach $2 billion to $3 billion in 2006, with SPI flash memory one of the fastest growing segments.

The new 3V addition to the Intel StrataFlash Embedded Memory family is an ideal solution for 3V embedded applications such as set top boxes, base stations and networking equipment. It will also offer developers a broad density range and product packaging options for use across many applications. The 3V version is currently sampling and expected to be in production in the fourth quarter of this year.

Intel plans its first entry into the serial flash market segment with SPI flash products that will offer high performance and security features for the consumer electronics and computing market segments. Serial flash technology reduces pin count and simplifies board design which saves board space and reduces time-to-market. Intel will offer an industry standard package pin out and command set, enabling customers to accelerate their design cycles. For use in applications such as DVDs, digital TVs, printers and PCs, the new serial flash products are sampling now and expected to also be in production in the fourth quarter.

“Analysts expect the NOR embedded flash market segments to continue to grow, nearly doubling from 2006 to 2010,” said Darin Billerbeck, vice president and general manager, Intel Flash Products Group. “Intel is committed to expanding its presence in these segments with a comprehensive product portfolio.”
