|Philips new hybrid Silicon Tuner adds worldwide HD & PVR capability to small PC platforms and saves up to 25% on costs|
Eindhoven, The Netherlands - Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI), the leading provider of Silicon Tuners, today announced TDA18271HD, a new worldwide multi-standard hybrid Silicon Tuner IC capable of receiving both analog and digital terrestrial broadcasts. This product is benefiting the PC-TV market with fast time-to-market, space savings, HD picture quality and significant cost advantages. The new Silicon Tuner now enables, for example, smaller sized Personal Video Recording (PVR) capable PC based systems to have low power consumption, a key advantage in portable USB peripherals.
The new silicon tuner:
* is quick and easy to design-in
* is significantly smaller than traditional can tuners
* offers a field-proven, production ready reference design
* covers analog and digital broadcast standards
* enables superb HD picture quality and video reception
* reduces the Bill-of-Material (BoM) by up to 25 percent
* has low power consumption, less than 800 mW
* meets CENELEC & Nordig specifications
Philips achieved this by being the first to provide an integrated splitter and feed-through in its silicon tuners that make it easy to chain them in multi-tuner systems. This step alone brings significant cost savings compared to any existing multi-tuner solutions.
"In the past, PC makers had to use bulky can tuners to reach high performance reception, high picture quality and low power consumption", said Robert Murray, Marketing Director for TV Front End solutions, Philips Semiconductors. "Today our considerably smaller hybrid Silicon Tuner reaches the same performance while significantly reducing systems costs. Our production ready reference designs pass both Nordig Unified & CENELEC and make sure that customers will get their new PVR capable products quicker into the homes of the consumers at an affordable price."
The TDA18271HD Silicon Tuner combined with a channel decoder (TDA10048) and a video-decoder (SAA713x) provides a full system for PCTV hybrid terrestrial applications at low power consumption. The integration of the analog IF demodulator in video decoders reduces the overall system size and cost, whilst lowering the cost of DTV only systems.
Within the TDA18271HD are RF tracking filters for unwanted signal suppression, IF selectivity and RF output for easy implementation in PVR dual tuner based cards. Features such as Multi-tuner configuration and loop-through for easy chaining of tuners were designed based on the input of leading manufacturers. The TDA18271HD offers 60dB image rejection, 5dB Noise Figure, and a low power consumption of 780 mW, outstanding for a fully integrated silicon tuner.
Pricing and Availability
Samples of the TDA18271HD are available now. Production quantities are expected for Q3 2006. Per unit pricing is less than $ 5.00 US for quantities of 10,000 units.
