Vitesse Announces Availability of its Low Cost Stackable Layer-2 Gigabit Ethernet Smart Switch

CAMARILLO, Calif. - Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: VTSS), the market leader in Gigabit Ethernet ICs, today announced the availability of the company’s E-StaX-34™ switch-on-a chip (SoC) product, the industry’s first low cost stackable Layer 2 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) Smart Switch designed to bring affordable Gigabit Ethernet to entry level applications at COMPUTEX Taipei 2006, which will be held at the Taipei World Trade Center on June 6-10. Additionally, Vitesse also announced that it will showcase the industry’s first integrated Gigabit Ethernet wireless broadband gateway solution designed to meet the needs of the growing wireless market driven by the small and medium to enterprise businesses. The solution will be showcased in One Grand Room No. 1121 during COMPUTEX.

According to Martyn Humphries, vice president and general manager of the Ethernet Products Division at Vitesse, “We are excited to announce the availability of the E-StaX-34 and to showcase our Gigabit Ethernet wireless broadband gateway solution for the growing SME/SOHO market at COMPUTEX Taipei 2006. These solutions are firsts of its kind. With its smaller footprint and our integrated SoC functionality to simplify printed circuit board layout, improve security, and streamline stack management and performance, the E-StaX-34 achieves a new cost point, making Gigabit Ethernet more affordable. Using industry leading technologies, the company’s wireless broadband gateway solution will become essential to meeting the higher bandwidth demands of the upcoming 802.11n standard.”

E-StaX-34 - Low Cost Scalability, High Performance Functionality
The E-StaX-34 reduces the total bill of materials for a Gigabit Ethernet stackable system eliminating the need for Fast Ethernet stackable solutions. Vitesse has achieved this with market leading innovations including a new patent-pending VStaX TM cabling technology, a scalable high-speed 24+4 port configuration, a performance driven architecture and a rich integrated feature set to deliver low cost GbE for OEM and ODM customers.

Upgrading from Fast Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet affords ten times the speed, ten times the bandwidth to enable new applications and support file sharing performance, reduced latency and granular Quality of Service (QoS) among other benefits. However, OEMs and ODMs have been unable to widely adopt the technology for entry-level solutions due to cost constraints. With a low cost GbE solution in a stackable Smart Switch to combine network intelligence with performance and scalability, these solution providers can now address a critical need for small and medium enterprise (SME) customers.

Gigabit Ethernet Wireless Broadband Gateway Solution
The mobile SME and SOHO markets are driving the increase in demand for wireless chipsets. With the emergence of the 802.11n standard that provides speeds much greater than Fast Ethernet can support, large-scale deployments of Gigabit Ethernet will also become more prevalent as Fast Ethernet will not be able to sustain with the increased bandwidth demands of 802.11n networks and bandwidth intensive applications such as IPTV, Large File Sharing, VoIP and Quality of Service (QoS).

Vitesse’s Gigabit Ethernet wireless broadband gateway solution combines Intoto’s iGateway RGS Standard – a complete software platform with network access, wireless LAN security, and firewall; and Ralink Technology’s wireless LAN chipset, the RT2600 which supports all standard-based features and requirements such as security, quality of service and international regulatory, thus providing end-users with higher performance than legacy devices. Star Semiconductor will also be providing its CPU, the STR9102 for the solution.
