Enhanced MD8480C W-CDMA Signalling Tester for 3.5G HSUPA-Compliant Mobile Phones

  Anritsu Corporation (Hiromichi Toda, President) today launches its enhanced MD8480C W-CDMA Signalling Tester with increased functionality and industry-first compliance with the 3.5G mobile HSUPA standard.

The new MD8480C with HSUPA Base Station Simulator functions is the industry's first signalling tester to support packet data transfer tests at maximum uplink (mobile terminal to base station) speeds of 5.76Mbps[*1], the maximum speed defined in 3GPP Release 6[*2]. This supports testing of HSUPA functions in a variety of communications conditions that current base stations cannot simulate.

By using this feature with the already released HSDPA Base Station Simulator function, it is possible to construct a test environment for HSPA (HSUPA/HSDPA) mobile terminals. To make the MD8480C compatible with the HSPA format, which performs high-speed data transfers based on circuit quality and user allocation, a single MD8480C unit can now output up to four base station signals, greatly increasing efficiency in development and testing of mobile terminals.

HSUPA: High Speed Uplink Packet Access

HSUPA is the high-speed packet transfer version of the W-CDMA 3G mobile phone system, defined in 3GPP Standard Release 6. Compared to HSDPA, which only supports high-speed downlink data transfers at speeds up to 14.4 Mbps (base station to terminal), HSUPA supports fast uplink data transfers at speeds up to 5.76 Mbps (terminal to base station). Optimum high-speed data transfer parameters are selected automatically based on circuit quality and user allocation. Commercial HSUPA services are expected to start in 2007.

[Development Background]

The rapid growth of 3G mobile services is promoting faster packet data communications in mobile systems. Several countries have already started commercial W-CDMA services offering high-speed downlink packet data using HSDPA, and R&D is starting into HSUPA systems providing high-speed uplink data transfers. As a consequence, the industry is eagerly anticipating a base station simulator with HSUPA and HSDPA capabilities. To address this need, Anritsu launched the MD8480C W-CDMA Signalling Tester in March 2005, enabling configuration of test environments for HSDPA mobile terminals. Since then, Anritsu has supplied the MD8480C to all the world's mobile phone and chipset manufacturers. With today's announcement, Anritsu is offering an industry first --- full HSUPA compliance for uplink packet data transmission testing at speeds up to 5.76 Mbps, the maximum transfer speed defined by 3GPP Standard Release 6. This supports configuration of test environments for cost-effective development of HSPA (HSUPA/HSDPA) mobile terminals, improving mobile phone development and testing.

[Product Overview]

The MD8480C W-CDMA Signalling Tester simulates the functions of W-CDMA/HSDPA/GSM/GPRS base stations. Today's new release adds support for HSUPA with maximum uplink data transfer speeds of 5.76 Mbps defined by 3GPP Release 6 and supports all HSUPA UE categories[*4] specified in 3GPP TS25.306[*3]. This supports testing of HSUPA mobile phone terminals based on 3GPP Standard Release 6, and combining this with HSDPA functions, supports testing of overall functions of HSDPA/HSUPA mobile terminals and chipsets, as well as protocol sequences (connection sequence between terminal and base station).

The MD8480C is also compatible with base stations using the EGPRS[*5] format, a 2G GSM/GPRS high-speed packet transmission format used widely outside Japan, supporting testing of every type of mobile phone terminal used by high-speed packet transmission services worldwide.

3.5G HSUPA-compliant mobiles are supported at uplink packet data transfer speeds (upload) of 5.76 Mbps (15 times faster than W-CDMA).

Supports handover testing[*6] in diversity[*7] reception for up to four base-station configuration

To safeguard quality and high-speed packet communications in difficult mobile environments, HSPA-compliant mobiles feature support for a data card with diversity reception. Simulation of up to four base stations is supported by adding options, enabling low-cost configuration of an all-in-one near-to-live test environment for evaluating mobile terminals with built-in diversity reception functions.

Covers six categories of HSUPA-compliant mobile terminals

The all-in-one MD8480C offers industry-first support for all categories of HSUPA mobiles defined by 3GPP TS25.306. Both general operation tests and protocol tests of HSUPA-compliant mobiles standardized by 3GPP Release 6 are supported along with expected future expansions of 3GPP functions.

Supports handover tests between HSPA (HSDPA/HSUPA) and EGPRS systems

Adding both the HSUPA and EGPRS functions supports handover tests between HSPA and EGPRS systems with continuous packet data transmission.
