Cirrus Logic Introduces the Most Flexible, Highest-Performing Audio Codec with Integrated Class D Speaker Driver

TOKYO – Broadening its portfolio of low-power audio converter integrated circuits (ICs) for portable applications, Cirrus Logic Inc. has launched the 24-bit CS42L52 low-power stereo codec. With its high levels of integration and high-performance audio output, the CS42L52 saves overall system costs by eliminating the need for numerous external components. Providing up to one watt-per-channel of highly efficient Class D amplification to external speakers, or enough power to drive 44 milliwatts per channel into stereo headphones, this portable audio codec also offers the flexibility to run its core from a single power supply and directly connect the Class-D amplifier to the battery supply for a more efficient operation. This combination of flexible features makes the CS42L52 an ideal audio codec for portable consumer electronics applications such as portable media players, game devices, MP3 player accessories, IC recorders, digital cameras and camcorders.

The CS42L52 builds upon the innovative design techniques of Cirrus Logic’s recently introduced low-power audio codecs by creating its own on-chip negative power supply voltage. With its ground-centered outputs, the CS42L52 helps to reduce clicks and pops during start up, improves low-end frequency response and eliminates costly, space-consuming DC blocking capacitors. The elimination of these capacitors reduces costs, simplifies product designs and enables smaller product form factors. The codec also features enhanced master clock support, which includes standard audio frequencies, as well as USB and video clocks. This limits the number of clocks in a system, providing designers a flexible, low-power solution.

“With the CS42L52, Cirrus Logic continues to develop a strong portfolio of products for the fast-growing segment of portable consumer electronics products,” said Jason Rhode, vice president and general manager, Cirrus Logic. “With high levels of integration, support features and output power, the CS42L52 gives system designers a highly optimized codec that’s easy to design.”

Among its features, the CS42L52 provides a digital signal processing engine, digital volume control, headphone/speaker detection switch, as well as flexible signal routing that includes a MIC pre-amp, Programmable Gain Array as well as an analog bypass mode. The integrated Class-D speaker driver also features the ability to directly connect to the battery supply and then simultaneous monitor that supply and compensate for any decay in the voltage. With a dynamic range of 98 dB, the CS42L52 delivers high-performance audio output with low noise, in a integrated solution that offers flexibility and reduced overall system cost.

The CS42L52 utilizes a 40-pin QFN package and consumes only 13 milliwatts of power at 1.8 volts in playback mode while driving stereo headphones.

The CS42L52 is in currently volume production and is priced at $3.95 in quantities of 10,000.
