|Bidirectional Video Filters/Buffers for Composite and S-Video Enable Connector Sharing in Portable Media Devices|
SUNNYVALE, CA— Solving the problem of limited board space for separate input and output connectors on portable consumer video devices, Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX7481/MAX7482 bidirectional video filters/buffers.
These devices provide reconstruction filters and line drive buffers for both composite video (CVBS) and S-video (Y/C) signals in playback mode and anti-aliasing filters in record mode for consumer devices, such as portable media players, digital camcorders, and digital still cameras. The MAX7481/MAX7482 are ideal for portable video applications that require low-voltage, low-power operation and analog video inputs and outputs.
"Many applications in the portable consumer market have unique requirements that call for connector sharing for video recording and playback," observes Jeremy Tole, Maxim's Director of Business Management for Advanced Video Products. "The MAX7481/MAX7482 utilize the same set of filters in both playback and record modes by using switches that route the signals through a different path for each mode. Implementing these internal switches with minimal on-resistance allows designers to use a single filter set for both modes. This unique functionality makes these devices efficient, compact solutions that save both space and cost."
Moreover, the MAX7481/MAX7482 feature Maxim's patented DirectDrive™ technology, which ensures low-power operation in a single-supply system. DirectDrive utilizes an internal negative charge pump and a regulator to maintain the output-blanking level at ground so that the output to the display can be DC-coupled. This topology eliminates the need for large output-coupling capacitors or a sag-correction configuration.
The MAX7481/MAX7482 offer many unique features that enable portable consumer applications to share connectors in record and playback modes:
* A composite and S-video record and video-playback interface for portable devices
* Inputs and outputs that share one connection to external video devices save space in portable media applications
* Advanced power-down modes for extended battery life
* Each channel consists of a lowpass filter and an output buffer capable of driving a full 2VP-P video signal into one standard 150Ohm load (DC-coupled to ground)
