|Cypress Joins Universal Powerline Association To Promote Sharing Of High-Definition Video Content Over Power Lines In The Home|
SAN JOSE, Calif., - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. today announced its membership in the Universal Powerline Association (UPA).
As a member, Cypress will leverage its expertise in connectivity and high-definition video to promote the UPA's digital home standard (DHS) for high-speed networking over power lines, the only power line communication standard currently producing silicon at the industry-leading data-rate of 200 Mbps.
"Cypress is a significant addition to the UPA, as it brings another established semiconductor provider to the table for this competitive power line communication technology," said Steve Rago, principal analyst for Networking and Optical Communications at iSuppli Corporation. "We expect power line home networking to grow at a 72% compound annual growth rate over the next several years."
"We are pleased to have a provider of high-performance solutions such as Cypress bring their know-how to the UPA," stated Eric Morel, chairman of the UPA. "This addition demonstrates the UPA has the global reach and technological superiority necessary to continue its rapid adoption."
"After a careful survey of the home networking technologies on the market, it was clear that the ubiquity of power lines make them the medium of choice to transport high-definition video data in the home," said Gopal Garg, managing director of Video and Interconnect Products at Cypress. "The UPA's standard delivers the fastest, most reliable specifications for solutions that are shipping in volume. We look forward to advancing the adoption of this technology to take the home theater experience to the next level with high-definition video content over the home network."
About the UPA
The Universal Powerline Association (UPA) is an International not-for-profit trade association working to promote global standards and regulations in the fast developing powerline communications market. The UPA aims to catalyse the growth of PLC/BPL technology by delivering UPA certified products that comply with these specified standards and regulations. All products and applications designed around UPA guidelines will communicate, from simple coexistence to full interoperability. The UPA provides all PLC/BPL players the opportunity to respond to key customer expectations with open standards, based on interoperability, security and coexistence and supported by exclusive and independent certifications, the only global guarantee of quality and confidence for high-speed power line technology available today.
Members of the UPA include AcBel Polytech Inc., Ambient Corporation, BPL Global, Corinex Communications, Current Technologies International, Cypress Semiconductor Corp., D-Link, DS2, Duke Energy, Ilevo (Schneider Electric Powerline Communications), Itochu Corporation, NETGEAR, Open Solutions, PCN Technology, Pirelli, Sumitomo Electric Industries, Tecnocom, Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH, TOYO Network Systems and Watteco.
