|Department of Defense Approves Harris Corporation's Mentor-Protégé Program with Amertron, Inc.|
MELBOURNE, Fla., — Harris Corporation, an international communications and information technology company, announced that the U.S. Department of Defense has approved the company's mentor-protégé program with Amertron, Inc., a Melbourne, Florida-area electronics manufacturer.
The DoD Mentor-Protégé program encourages large, established prime contractors such as Harris to help develop the technical and management capabilities of small disadvantaged businesses and provide the means for the protégé companies like Amertron to become technical innovators.
"I welcome this announcement," said U.S. Representative Dave Weldon (R-FL). "Harris is a major contributor to this area's economy, and the company's willingness to mentor other local government suppliers like Amertron is of great benefit to our community, as well as to the national agencies with which they do business."
"We are very pleased to receive this approval from the DoD, which further enhances the long-term relationship we have with Amertron," said Sheldon Fox, vice president and general manager, DoD Programs, Harris Government Communications Systems Division. "As a long-time government contractor, Harris has developed a successful business model for addressing the government market and for meeting the unique technology challenges faced by the DoD. Through the DoD Mentor-Protégé program, we can work with smaller businesses such as Amertron to enhance their potential and create a win-win situation that offers opportunities for growth for both companies."
Under the one-year program, Harris will help Amertron develop its management and operations resources and processes — enhancing its abilities to obtain future DoD, other U.S. government, and commercial contracts and subcontracts at competitive prices. Harris will provide Amertron access to its business management operations for observation and applications, including financial, human resources, marketing, business development and overall business planning functions.
An official strategic supplier of Harris, Amertron received the Harris Small Disadvantaged Business Supplier of the Year Award in 2006 for its outstanding work. In addition, Harris nominated Amertron for the Small Business Administration's 2005 U.S. Small Business Subcontractor of the Year award.
"We are very pleased to be selected by Harris for this mentoring program and to have the opportunity to jointly pursue opportunities with such a successful prime contractor," said James Harhi, president of Amertron. "This agreement will enable us to strengthen our business relationship with one of the premier communications and information technology companies in the U.S. federal government sector, and to fully develop our potential in addressing government contracts."
The DoD Mentor-Protégé program, which is overseen by the Department of Defense, Office of Small Business Programs, Mentor-Protégé Division, is designed to motivate and encourage large prime contractors to provide mutually beneficial developmental assistance to small disadvantaged businesses, qualified organizations employing the severely disabled, women-owned small businesses, service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses, or historically underutilized business zone small business concerns. The program also improves the performance of DoD contracts and subcontracts, fosters the establishment of long-term business relationships between DoD large prime contractors and small business subcontractors, and strengthens subcontracting opportunities and accomplishments within the DoD.
