Industry's First Inductorless, Class G Speaker Amplifier Doubles Output Power and Increases Battery Life

Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX9730, a 2.4W, single-supply, mono, Class G speaker amplifier. The MAX9730's Class G architecture and integrated charge-pump power supply enable this device to deliver two times more output power than conventional Class AB or Class D speaker amplifiers provide from a lithium-ion (Li+) battery. The charge pump can deliver up to 500mA over a 2.7V to 5.5V supply-voltage range, guaranteeing up to 2.4W into an 8Ohm load from a 3.3V supply. The MAX9730 significantly reduces the size and cost of the total solution by eliminating the boost converter and large inductor commonly needed to achieve the same performance—this makes it ideal for cellular phones, notebook computers, and other portable applications in which board space is limited.

The MAX9730 maximizes battery life by using a proprietary output stage that provides efficiency levels greater than Class AB devices, without the EMI penalties commonly associated with Class D amplifiers. Additionally, this device features short-circuit and thermal-overload protection, comprehensive click-and-pop suppression, shutdown control, and soft-start circuitry.

The MAX9730 is fully specified over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range. It is available in ultra-small, 2mm x 2.5mm, lead-free, 20-bump UCSP™ and 4mm x 4mm, 28-pin TQFN packages. Prices start at $0.80 (1000-up, FOB USA).
