AKM Launches High Performance Single-Chip Multi-Function Audio CODEC for AV Systems

Tokyo, Japan - Asahi Kasei Microsystems Co. launches the AK4683, a multi-function audio CODEC for flat-screen TVs, home theatre systems, DVD receivers and in-car applications.

This versatile chip integrates a 2-channel ADC, 4-four channel DAC (192 kHz sampling), a headphone amplifier and a192 kHz compatible Digital Audio Receiver and Transmitter (DIR/DIT) with four inputs and one output.

The AK4683’s digital audio interface (S/PDIF) and headphone amplifier make it easy to put together high performance home theatre systems. The pre-ADC stage has a preamp with 6-channel input selector. As the preamp input range can be easily configured with external resistors it can tolerate a 5V input power supply, such as 4 Vrms or more. The post-ADC digital volume controls allow for independent level adjustments from +24 dB to -103 dB.

The AK4683 DAC has four output channels and built-in digital volume controls for independent adjustment of the level from +12 dB to –115 dB. Two of the four channels have a headphone and line outputs, and the headphone output features a mute circuit that eliminates the need for an external mute circuit to suppress the pop noise generated when power is switched on/off.

The AK4683’s digital audio interface conforms to AES3, IEC60958, S/PDIF and EIAJ CP1201. Along with the digital audio receiver and transmitter it is compatible with 192 kHz, 24-bit data. The DIR has a 4-channel input selector and interfaces with many digital AV devices as it detects both PCM and non-PCM data, such as Dolby Digital.

The serial audio interface for a digital signal processor (DSP) has two ports and each ADC, DAC and DIR/DIT block can be operated by two-system blocks. The audio format is compatible with TDM systems and pre-packed and post-packed I2S, which simplifies the DSP interface.

The AK4683 is available in a 64-pin LQFP package. Evaluation boards and engineering samples are available now.
