| Intersil Introduces Cost Effective, High Efficiency, Quad-Output Main
Power Supply Controller for Notebook Computers | | | |
MILPITAS, CA – Intersil Corporation
(NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced
the release of the ISL6232, a system power supply controller for notebook computers. The ISL6232 is a high
efficiency, quad-output controller optimized for converting battery, wall adapter or network DC input voltage into
system supply voltages required for portable applications. The ISL6232 includes two PWM controllers generating 0.8V
to 5.5V outputs. It also features 5V and 3.3V always linear regulators with up to 100mA output current. The ISL6232
uses constant frequency current mode PWM control with out-of-phase operation for reducing the input ripple current
and addressing the ESR requirement of the input capacitors. It has quiescent power dissipation as low as 3.5mW.
Over 95 percent maximum efficiency is achieved through synchronous rectification and its dual PWM/Skip mode
architecture. The ISL6232’s programmable high light load efficiency extends the battery life in system standby or
shutdown mode. The device’s ultrasonic pulse skipping mode maintains switching frequency above 25kHz to eliminate
the audio noise enabling high light load efficiency, and fixed frequency PWM operation mode reduces the RF
interference in sensitive applications.
The ISL6232 provides a number of features that minimize
overall system implementation cost. First, the dual PWMs supply out-of-phase outputs so that input ripple current is
reduced to a minimum. This allows smaller, lower cost input capacitors to be used. Second, external compensation
allows optimization for most cost effective output capacitors and inductors. Finally, the dual LDOs support all
ceramic capacitor designs, further minimizing cost.
The ISL6232 also features over-voltage
protection, power-up sequences, power good output, and thermal shutdown. Additionally, over-current protection is
provided by sensing the current either through the DCR of the inductor or more accurately using a current sense
resistor. The peak current detection architecture avoids inductor saturation. Also, the device automatically shuts
down when VOUT is less than 70 percent of the regulation voltage after 20ms. The internal soft-start feature is
provided to control inrush current. The soft-stop feature avoids negative output voltage for under-voltage
protection, over-current protection, and shutdown by discharging output through an internal switch, and by damping
the inductor current.
