Micrel Introduces 3A Ultra-Fast Transient Response PWM Buck Regulator

San Jose, Calif. — Micrel Inc. launched the MIC2208, a new 1 MHz 3A PWM buck regulator IC in a tiny 3mm x 3mm MLF™-10L package. The MIC2208 features a flexible design and ultra-fast transient response. It is capable of providing a wide range of outputs, allowing efficiencies above 94 percent. The external compensation allows the use of ultra-small inductor and output capacitor values while providing uncompromised fast transient response and low noise operation.

“Today’s advanced digital cores demand higher power densities, ultra-fast load steps and enhanced power conversion performance,” noted Ralf Muenster, Micrel’s director of marketing for power products. “Micrel’s small MIC2208 buck regulator offers increased flexibility and extreme transient response, providing designers with a new best-in-class choice for their buck regulator applications.”

The chip is aimed at point-of-load applications in telecom, networking, servers, set-top boxes and consumer electronics equipment. The IC offers 2.7 to 5.5V supply voltage and output current to 3A. It features 100 percent maximum duty cycle, an adjustable output voltage option down to 1V, a fully integrated 5A MOSFET switch, micropower and thermal shutdown, and current limit protection.
