| World's First Burst-Mode Clock-Phase Aligner Acquires a Signal in <
13 Bits, Enabling Best-in-Class BPON and GPON OLT Designs | | | |
Maxim Integrated Products
introduces the MAX3634, industry's first burst-mode clock-phase aligner (CPA) for BPON and GPON applications. Fiber
to the Home (FTTH) deployments using PONs are expected to progress from the current BPON technology to
next-generation GPON technology. GPON specifications allow downstream continuous data transfer at 2.488Gbps and
upstream burst data transfer at 1.244Gbps. Operating at 622Mbps and at 1.244Gbps within the signal's first 13 bits,
the MAX3634 is ideal for BPON and GPON optical line terminations (OLT) receivers.
The MAX3634 can be
DC-coupled to the OLT limiting amplifier. Then the device takes the upstream burst data from the limiting amplifier
and provides a clock and clock-aligned resynchronized, differential output. Using the OLT system clock as a
reference at 1/8th the data rate, the MAX3634 aligns to the input data and is guaranteed to acquire a signal within
the first 13 bits of the burst. The device has a high-frequency jitter tolerance of > 0.8UI. It provides
continuous high-speed LVPECL clock and data outputs that meet all PMD level GPON specifications and are compatible
with standard FPGAs. The MAX3634 also features a LVPECL reset input and a lock-detect output.
Available in a 7mm x 7mm, 48-pin TQFN package over the extended
temperature range (-40°C to +85°C), the MAX3634 is priced at $15 (1000-up, suggested resale, FOB USA).
Evaluation kits are available.
