| Analog Devices’ Kermarrec Details The Evolution Of High-Speed Cellular Networks|
Norwood, MA - “Optimizing EDGE Deployments and Evolution for the Delivery of Low-Cost, High-Speed Networks,” is the theme in Prague, Czech Republic, for a wireless industry conference which will bring together Analog Devices’ vice president of RF and wireless systems, Christian Kermarrec along with other executives from around the industry. Network operators, mobile equipment providers and semiconductor companies will discuss important issues facing the evolution of EDGE networks, including new services and applications made available by EDGE, deploying 3G with combined EDGE and WCDMA networks, and the role of EDGE in the enterprise.
The panel session, titled “Are Device Manufacturers Doing Enough to Support Operators Driving the Take-Up and Evolution of EDGE?” will take place on Wednesday, January 25 at 5:05 p.m. local time. The panel will explore topics such as the availability of triple-mode GSM/GPRS-EDGE-UMTS/WCDMA handsets, pricing for mass-market adoption, ensuring a seamless user experience and the design of efficient architectures to support increased data rates. Mr. Kermarrec will present the views of a semiconductor supplier to the market.
“Industry data shows that the number of EDGE networks operating worldwide has tripled in the last year,” said Christian Kermarrec, vice president, RF and wireless systems, Analog Devices, Inc. “This impressive growth places more pressure on semiconductor suppliers to meet industry demand while continuing to innovate and grow their product offerings. Analog Devices was the first company to introduce a complete open-market platform for EDGE handset design, and we have built upon our legacy of innovation to create one of the most comprehensive portfolios of EDGE solutions.” Analog Devices has been shipping EDGE chipsets for over two years.
Analog Devices offers EDGE handset solutions that span the entire signal chain, from microphone to antenna. The company’s Blackfin® SoftFone® for EDGE platform is one of the most successful open-market EDGE baseband processors, as evidenced by its inclusion in EDGE mobile devices from leading wireless device manufacturers. Complementing Analog Devices’ Blackfin SoftFone for EDGE platform is the Othello®-E transceiver, which integrates virtually all the necessary components, including voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs), PLL loop filters and power management, for a complete quad-band EDGE radio design. The innovative closed-loop polar modulation implemented in Othello-E eases design complexity in EDGE handsets, while the device’s ultra-small packaging makes it among the smallest EDGE transceivers available on the market today. Together, SoftFone and Othello enable substantial BOM savings while maintaining flexibility, thereby providing benefits to both handset manufacturers and operators.
According to recent data from the GSA (Global mobile Suppliers Association), over 150 operators in 85 countries have committed to the upgrade to EDGE, and over 140 GSM/EDGE-enabled devices have been launched in the market. In addition, 48 cellular operators are now operating or deploying combined EDGE/WCDMA networks, which illustrates the growing popularity of EDGE as a reliable, high-speed fallback technology for 3G networks.
