Lattice MachXO Devices Provide New Low Cost Alternative to CPLDs and FPGAs
HILLSBORO, OR - Lattice Semiconductor Corporation announced its new MachXO™ family as well as immediate availability of its first two members, the MachXO256 and MachXO640. This new class of Crossover Programmable Logic device supports applications that traditionally have been addressed either by high density CPLDs or low capacity FPGAs, but with a more comprehensive and cost-effective architecture and technology. Through the use of 130nm non-volatile embedded Flash process technology, and the use of an industry-standard 4-input Look-up Table (LUT) approach for logic implementation, these new devices provide system designers with up to 50% lower cost per logic function, yet deliver a dramatic increase in features.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors spotlights a bridge: Tiny LEDs take centre stage
Visitors to the Regensburg festival, which took place from June 24 to 26, were attracted to the town’s famous Stone Bridge by a mysterious light. Osram Opto Semiconductors bathed the historic bridge in a magical atmosphere with two special LED spotlights. The lighting installation was part of the Treasure Island concept of Stadtmaus, the Regensburg event organiser and provided the lighting framework for a mediaeval spectacle.

Rice University Laser-based Air and Medical Sensors Powered by TI Digital Signal
HOUSTON – Helping to advance intelligent sensing applications, researchers at Rice University, Houston, TX have successfully tested laser-based air and medical sensors using Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) 32-bit TMS320F28x™ digital signal processor (DSP)-based controllers to detect the presence of specific gases in concentrations in the range of parts per billion to (ppb) parts per trillion (ppt). Pulsed quantum cascade (QC) laser-based sensors use laser absorption spectroscopy to measure electromagnetic radiation for applications including spacecraft air quality monitoring, breath analysis to detect certain medical conditions, volcanic emission monitoring and networked air monitoring of combustion sources and noxious gasses in urban-industrial settings. TI’s highly integrated TMS320F2812 controller operates the lasers, converts and then processes the optical detector signals into highly precise measurements.
